No more delays in introducing a Common European Asylum System by 2012

Brussels, 1 June 2011 – Ahead of the Polish Presidency, the Commission proposed today modifications to the Asylum Reception Conditions and Asylum Procedures Directives (tabled respectively in 2008 and 2009) to overcome the ongoing impasse and give new impetus to negotiations. ALDE welcomes that the revised proposals maintain the core purpose of the original directives and calls on the Council to avoid wasting more time.

EU must tackle youth unemployment through vocational education and training

Strasbourg, 8 June 2011 – Member States must adopt purposeful strategies to combat youth unemployment, taking into account specific national circumstances and needs – this was the core message of a report by ALDE MEP Nadja Hirsch adopted today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on vocational training and education. Action needs to be taken quickly: youth unemployment is one of Europe’s most pressing challenges. It is not just that the unemployment rate is higher among young workers than among their adult counterparts: young people are also to be found more frequently in insecure temporary jobs with lower pay and weaker social security cover.
