As Members of the European Parliament we constitute the link between our constituencies and the European Union. We act as contact persons on European topics not only for citizens and organisations, but also for our colleagues in the national or federal-level parliaments, district administrations and municipal councils.

My aim is to explain decisions and their consequences to the people who are actually concerned by them and to take their views, fears and hopes into account when preparing these decisions. Even though nowadays the large majority of national laws is the product of European Union legislation, this does not mean that “Brussels” can be held responsible for everything that’s going wrong. Quite the contrary: in most of the cases the Council and the Parliament adopt so-called “directives”, which are then implemented under the responsibility of Member States. It is in this context, that some national actors may be too eager or too careless and legislation may become burdensome.
